The management of Kasselsvlei Comprehensive High School in Bellville South will host a show featuring popular Cape Town entertainer, Emo Adams, in a bid to raise much-needed funds to safeguard the school.
Principal Ronald Bantom says over the last month, the school has been hard hit by petty theft, vandalism and brazen skollies who walk straight into classrooms to harass children.
He says thieves have torn down the school’s fences, made fires on stairways and destroyed a Consumer Studies classroom.
In the most recent incident, a school teacher approached a thug on the premises and he pulled out a firearm and threatened the teacher.
Bantom says these incidents are ongoing and despite reporting them to the police, the situation seems to remain unchanged as teachers and learners study under constant threat.
“In our community, we are faced with the challenges of young boytjies who are using tik, coming to the school and burgling classes,” the palie explains.
“We report them to the police and even arrested some of them ourselves. They steal the fluorescent lights for the small copper pieces to sell and the damage to the school is enormous.

“They go into the roof and steal the wiring. When they steal the cables, we have no internet, our interactive white boards don’t work. It is totally crippling us.”
When the Daily Voice visited the school on Monday, two teachers chasing off a group of boys who tried to enter the school grounds through a hole in the fence.
Bantom says the Consumer Studies class flooded recently after skelms stole water pipes, damaging several stoves used for practicals.
Now along with the School Governing Body, teachers and learners are working to sell 1000 tickets to the Emo Adams show in the hopes of raising funds to fix the fences, safeguard classrooms and hire security guards.
Bantom says the school, which has just under 1000 learners, cannot afford the security upgrades as many parents also cannot afford school fees.
The school’s show will be held in the hall on 13 October, starting at 7pm.
Tickets, at R100 each, are available at the school. Call Candice on 021 951 3427.
