"The police commended the victim's family for being observant and acting swiftly upon discovering the crime,” said police spokesperson FC van Wyk.

Saturday's incident happened a day after angry Caledon residents protested at the town's police station after a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter over a period of months.

Van Wyk said Caledon police reported the alleged abuse had started in June and she reported the incidents on September 23 to a family member.

The residents were outraged as the rape was the second reported incident in the town in as many weeks, according to community leader Bulelwa Galawe, who added that they had handed over a memorandum to the police.

Van Wyk said an alleged rape of a two-year-old child by a 14-year-old boy at his house was reported to Caledon Police on September 18.

The case was opened and the two-year-old child received medical treatment the same day at Caledon hospital.

"The 14-year-old was arrested and appeared in court on September 19 and the child was referred to a forensic social worker on October 4. The case was still under investigation,” said Van Wyk.

“The victim received treatment at Caledon hospital and was referred to the Department of Social Development for assessment.

"A 30-year-old male was arrested on September 25 and charged, appearing in court on September 27 and remanded until October 3 for a bail application.

"The 10-year-old child was removed from her mother by social worker and put in place of safety.”
