Staff at Ackermans at the Lansdowne Corner Shopping Centre were left traumatised after armed skurke robbed them on Wednesday.

Police say shortly after 2pm, four skelms entered the store, approached a security guard and asked to speak to the manager.

Lieutenant-Colonel Dawood Laing, visible police commander at Philippi Police Station says, soon as the manager arrived, one of the men took out a gun.

“He took out the firearm and told the manager to not be stupid. He apparently told the manager not to panic and remember he has children. They said they were just there for cellphones and they would leave,” says Laing.

The skelms told the manager to bring cellphones from three particular brands as they took out two big bags to fill.

“They filled the one bag. We think they ran out of time because the one robber got a phone call and they quickly took the one big bag and fled the scene.”

Laing says a Mercedes-Benz and a Hyundai Getz were used in the robbery and no arrests have been made.

No shots were fired and nobody was hurt in the robbery.

Ackermans spokesperson, Karin Lombard-De Lock, confirms no staff were injured and says the store has reopened.

“The employees present in the store during the robbery are currently undergoing trauma counselling provided by Ackermans. The extent of stock lost is still being investigated.

“The safety of our customers and employees across all our stores is paramount and our security measures are subject to rigorous and ongoing scrutiny to ensure their effectiveness.”
