A well-known supermarket in Athlone was robbed of cash and cigarettes on Thursday morning.
Just after 10am, the Lincoln Superette in Belgravia Road was robbed by four men, while a fifth waited in a getaway car.
The store manager, a Pakistani national who did not wish to be named, could not say whether the men were armed or not, but they stormed in and started turning the winkel upside.
“They just came in, they were three African males and a coloured and started demanding things,” he says.
The manager explains they took all the cigarettes and looted the money from the cash registers.
“They came and took all the money in the tills. They even took the one till. They also took the one TV and decoder and cleared the shelves of all the cigarettes,” he adds.
“Luckily none of us were hurt and we are now operating business as usual,” the manager added.
The men were seen fleeing the scene in a red Renault Clio.
When the Daily Voice visited the store, the cigarette shelves had been restocked and stock deliveries were arriving.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says a business robbery case has been opened for investigation.
“This office can confirm a robbery where five unidentified males were involved. According to reports, one was armed with a firearm. They took an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes, a teller machine, TV and a decoder,” he said.
“No arrest has been made as yet, the investigation continues.
