Dop on Cape town beaches a major headache

The City of Cape Town's law enforcement division had its hands full towards the end of the holiday season, with liquor transgressions on beaches among its biggest headaches.

According to Wayne Dyason of the City's Law Enforcement, a total of 2376 fines were issued and 11 arrests made last week, with 2 927 units of alcohol being confiscated on the city's beaches. This was more than the previous week's total of 1 716 units.

Dyason said a 34-year-old male from Manenberg was arrested after being found in possession of 925 Periwinkles in the Kalk Bay area on 7 January by the City's Marine Unit members. He was taken to the Muizenberg SAPS and charged in terms of the Marine and Living Resources Act. 

Also, at about 2:30 am on 6 January, poachers in the Melkbos area left a carrier alone with a stash with 259 shucked units of abalone at Slabbers Klippe beach. 

A runner was approached by Marine Unit Auxiliary Officers and “true to his title he managed to run like the wind and escape the officers”, said Dyason.

In separate incidents, on 5 January, a 36- and a 34-year-old suspect were arrested on the Grand Parade for possession of dagga and tik respectively.
