A suspected thief got a lucky escape from his attackers at Wolfgat Nature Reserve on Saturday as Law Enforcement officers arrived shortly after he was being moered.

Law Enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says officers of the Marine Unit conducting patrols at Wolfgat, an area notorious for dumped bodies, came across the bloody scene on Saturday morning.

He says shortly after 11 am officers saw two Toyota Quantum taxis parked at the entry road to the reserve and decided to investigate.

As they approached, they got a skrik when a bloody man suddenly jumped out of a window.

“As the officers approached, he saw a gap and just jumped out of the window. He was beaten badly and was bleeding. He had severe head injuries and was bleeding profusely,” says Dyason.

“It was clear he had been severely assaulted. There were six adult males in the vehicles and the officers detained all six on suspicion of assault with the intention to commit grievous bodily harm.”

Dyason says while at Mitchells Plain Police Station it was revealed the 26-year-old victim from Philippi East was suspected of theft.

“It appears that it was a kangaroo court because he was accused of stealing clothes.

“The officers called an ambulance who took him to Mitchells Plain District Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Because he was unable to make a statement police took the details of the men, opened a skeleton docket and released them.

“If he goes to make a statement, police will then arrest the men.”

Dyason says Wolfgat is a hotspot for body dumping.

“The area is notorious for this kind of thing. So the officers do routine patrols and keep a close eye on that area,” he says.
