Police say they have nabbed a “drooling” 49-year-old taxi
driver after they caught him dik getik behind the wheel while transporting school children.
The driver was arrested on Friday with nine children in his van en route to a school in Diep River.
Grassy Park Police Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Dawood Laing, says the man was caught at a roadblock and that tik and a tik lollie had been found in his possession.
The driver cannot be identified until he makes his first appearance at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
His luck ran out on Friday just before 8am when he was stopped during a roadblock along De Wet Road in Ottery, during a joint operation between Law Enforcement and Grassy Park Police Station.
Laing, who was on the scene, says he noticed the driver’s suspicious behaviour.
He says the driver was drooling all over the place, with nine high school children in the back of the van.
“There were nine children in the taxi and he still had to fetch three others.”
Laing says when asked for his driver’s licence, taxi permit and PDP, the man could only produce his licence.
He says he also searched the suspect and was shocked to find drugs on him.
“I asked him when last did he smoke and he said he only smoked dagga and I could tell he must have smoked before fetching these children (that morning).
“I did a search and found tik and a lollie in his possession,” says the top cop.
He says blood samples were taken from the suspect which will form part of the investigation.
The driver was arrested at the scene.
Laing says his team then took the children to school themselves and impounded the taxi.
He says the man is facing charges of driving under the influence, possession of drugs, and operating a taxi without a permit and PDP.
Laing urged parents to check on school transport drivers regularly and report illegal behaviour.
He says the police also contacted the taxi owner, who claimed he was unaware of his driver’s drug habit.
“What if he had made an accident? The (taxi) owner said he was not aware of this. These children’s parents make use of this transport so that their children can arrive safely at school.”
