The infamous Al-Noor Orphanage, which has been shut down, is running a centre for special outreach projects.

It is trying to appeal to an older generation.

“We are catering for people from 18 and over to come and be a part of the projects,” said Al-Noor facilities manager Nkululeko Mboniswa.

Among the projects will be sewing, HIV programmes, knitting, gardening as well as arts and culture activities.

Since the shutdown, Mboniswa said: “We are willing to co-operate with the investigations.

“However, we will remain open to run our outreach projects.”

Orphanage manager Amina Okpara was arrested by the Hawks for fraud and corruption on June 14 - two days after the orphanage was shut down and 17 children removed.

She was granted bail last month after the state failed to prove she was a flight risk. Mboniswa handed himself over to the Cape Town Central police last month. He faces charges of assault (GBH), sexual assault and the grooming of a child. He was released on bail for R400. He will appear at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court in September.

Mboniswa said he handed himself over to help the investigation.

“Remember that one is innocent until proven guilty. I want to co-operate,” he said.
