The family of a young man who spent his days working in construction and his spare time praying and learning at the Delft mosque are devastated after he was gunned down.
Just before maghrib prayers on Sunday evening, congregants at Masjidul Jumu’ah in Voorbrug got a skrik as shots rang out in front of the gate at the Uintjie Street entrance.
Shocked worshippers ran for cover as more than 10 shots were fired.
Dillon Isaacs, 21, died in front of the mosque in a killing that is believed to be a case of mistaken identity.
A caretaker at the mosque, who asked to remain anonymous, tells the Daily Voice that the young man was well known because he was always at the mosque where he prayed, and he would walk through the property to get his transport for work every morning.
At the time of the
shooting, Dillon was sitting opposite the mosque on a netball court with a group of friends.
One of the friends said they were playing dominoes as Dillon waited for the athaan, and he was upbeat and talking about his future plans.
The young men often sat on the netball court, believing skollies wouldn’t shoot near a place of prayer.
The friend said Dillon was not a drug addict, nor did he belong to any gang.
Dillon jumped up as an unknown man approached the group and suddenly opened fire.
He was shot several times in the upper chest and died on the scene.
The shooter fled on foot towards Leiden.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene, where Dillon’s traumatised father, Donovan Williams, 45, from Belhar, arrived to find his son already dead.
“We don’t know what this was about, but I think it must have been a case of mistaken identity,” a confused Donovan says.
“He was a good young man and worked with me in construction.
“Lately he had been doing private welding jobs here in the community.
“I taught him how to weld.
“We don’t know what happened and are depending on the police to help us find answers.”
Police spokesperson, Siyabulela Malo, confirms an investigation is underway.
“A case of murder was opened for investigation following a shooting incident that occurred at Silversands Road, Voorbrug, in Delft [on Sunday] at 7.15pm.
“He was declared dead on the scene due to his injuries. The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated and the arrests are yet to be made.”
