Chikro Food Market in Mitchells Plain has issued an apology to their Muslim customers after their halaal sausage was incorrectly labeled as vark wors.
The pakkie wors had two labels on the packaging - one with a halaal sticker and another with a Garries Griller sticker which lists pork as one of the ingredients.
The picture was shared on social media after angry Muslim customers spotted the error.
Chikro Mitchells Plain manager, Abubakr Brenner blamed Garries Griller for the unfortunate mistake and said all their products are strictly halaal.
“We have been selling this sausage for three years and can guarantee that it doesn’t contain pork products at all. This is the error of Garies Griller and not Chikro,” he told the Daily Voice.
In a statement posted on Chikro’s Facebook page on Wednesday, the owners said the "mix up of labels has since been resolved".
Meanwhile, Garies Griller managing director, Chris Green has apologised for the mistake.
“The spices for Garies Griller we supply to Chikro Mitchells Plain are Halaal certified by ICSA. Our labels have different meat content, catering for Halal and Non-Halal markets. In error, the incorrect label was delivered (to Chikro). I would just like to clarify that we only supply the spice and the labels to Chikro, they manufacture all products themselves.”

Green said that disciplinary action has been taken and systems have been put in place to prevent this from happening in the future.
“I wish to assure you that this was an honest mistake, absolutely no disrespect or malicious harm was in any way meant towards the Muslim community.”
