An Epping-based company that repairs household appliances has offered to fix a scammed Bonteheuwel ouma’s fridge for free.

Rita Georgia, 54, who lives in Swartysterhout Street has been without a fridge for FOUR weeks after a repairman took R1500 from her, but failed to repair her broken fridge.

The stressed ouma and her 62-year-old partner used the last of their money to pay Abie’s Repairs, after their five-year-old Defy fridge packed up at the beginning of this month.

Rita says all their food was spoiled and they now have to buy kos on a daily basis to save money.

She says the repairman, known as Christopher, was very nice in the beginning and explained that the fridge needed regassing.

According to Rita, the advert said the regassing would cost R180, but she ended up paying R1500.

She says Christopher came to do the repairs, but told her the R180 was “just the call-out fee”. On top of that, her fridge was still broken.

When the Daily Voice contacted Christopher last week, he acknowledged having worked on Rita’s fridge and said they charged Rita R1500 for the regassing and a new compressor.

Asked why he hasn’t been back to see Rita, he said: “We have lots of other clients.”

He then promised to refund her instead.

“We promise to refund her and remove our brand-new compressor. You can follow up with her by Friday,” he said.

But Rita says nothing has happened since.

Meanwhile, Zaheer Omarjee from Fixitt Refrigeration & Appliance Repairs in Epping has offered to try and help Rita: “We will attempt to repair it at no cost to her.”

Rita says she is grateful to Zaheer and hopes her fridge will be repaired in time for Christmas.

“We cannot afford to buy a new fridge and are grateful for the help. Thank you to the Daily Voice, too.”
