‘You stole my song’: Waseef Piekaan & Jamie Barthus in social media rol
There's bad blood between two Cape Town comedians who previously belonged to the same boy band but who are now trashing each other on social media - over a song.
Popular local artist and klops performer, Waseef Piekaan, has accused social media entertainer Jamie Barthus of “stealing” a song which he had written while the two were still part of That Funny Boy Band.
The group, which included Alen the Car Guard and Shakir Hansen, broke up in January after just three months.
This after Jamie had recorded the song, called Alibama Vannie Kaap, and posted a 90-second video of it on his Facebook page, Jamie’s Comedy, where it attracted over 18k views.
Waseef says Jamie has stolen his intellectual property - even though he hasn’t copyrighted it- and is making money off it.
Waseef posted on Facebook: “Can someone tell Jamie Barthus to take my song #Alibama off his wall because he blocked me when I pointed it out on [the] post. Stealing content is not on.
“The song he posted is mine. They took me out of my song and posted it as theirs.
“I told Jamie to take Shakir off the song because it’s my concept, but I see now they took me out instead, it just shows that they want to gain the money alone.
“YouTube starts paying you for your video after it gets to 100 000 likes - with previous videos, I just thought they would split the money if it got to that but it never happened.
“Jamie wants to show everyone that he is the ou and wants to take charge of everything,
“Everything he produced for other people, he wants to add his vocals to, his selfish.
“Allah slaapie, at the end of the day, they can say nasty stuff about me but God knows the truth and God will reveal the liars.
“That’s the last song they had of me, now people will see they have nothing anymore.”
But Jamie denies the allegations and says Waseef cannot claim copyright of a folk song.
“I made the beat and he gave the lyrics, I don’t know if he wrote that lyrics because if I go on YouTube and listen to other Alibama songs, there are words in there from those actual songs,” he says.
“The song had Waseef, Alen the Car Guard and Shakir ‘Chuqy’ Hansen’s vocals in and Waseef told me to take their voices out and just use mine and his.
“We are doing a cover of the original Alibama song, we aren’t using anything from him.
“I don’t claim ownership for the song, it was a group effort and he left the group so we still went on to use the song.”

But Waseef maintains it’s his work: “Your beat, not your concept, not your words, nothing. This is my intellectual property, my content, my concept.
“You know nothing of klops or culture, skelm.”
