WATCH: Mummies fill tummies

Venecia Valentine|Published

As the lockdown to slow the spread of Covid-19 continues, many families are struggling.

That’s why these three Mitchells Plain moms have taken it upon themselves to feed children in their community of Rocklands using what little food they have.

The moms are neighbours in Viscount Street, and say sharing and caring are second nature to them.

It started In May, when they emptied their koskassies to make breakfast and lunch for the kids in their street, thinking the lockdown period would end soon.

But two months on and the ladies are still feeding kids, and now the elderly and some adults have joined the queue in front of the home of pensioner Priscilla Martin.

Priscilla, 64, says they serve breakfast every day, and a hot meal three times a week.

Her friends, Marsha Keseni, 35, and Penelope Botha, 34, make sure the kids are sanitised, wear their masks and practise social distancing, while Priscilla dishes the food.

Currently, the trio feeds breakfast at 9am and then at 4pm they serve the hot meals.

“We feed the community porridge on a daily basis and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we serve warm meals,” says Marsha.

“Since having to extend our feeding scheme due to the lockdown being extended, we got support from Can Retreat and the Woodstock Upliftment Project, and manage to feed around 400 children per week.”

The moms prepare maize meal and oats in the morning accompanied with fruit and juice.

The warm meals are dhal curry, vegetable soup and chicken curry.

Priscilla says: “Social distancing is our main priority, we educate our children and parents to sanitise and wear a mask at every feed.”

Penelope adds: “We are a non-profit organisation and rely on donations, but dig into our own pockets when the need arises.

“We first give all the children and the aged food, and what is left goes to the adults.”

The moms says they will keep the feeding scheme beyond lockdown.
