The St. Timothy Anglican Church on Vliegtuig Avenue in Factreton was burgled over the weekend and three days later, the church is still trying to fix the damage.
The break-in was discovered early on Sunday morning by church council member, Cathy Scholtz.
Scholtz, who lives directly opposite the church, is the caretaker and manager of the church says besides their missing electricity box, nothing was taken.
She discovered something was amiss when she attempted to switch the lights on at 6.30am.
“I pressed and pressed [the switch], but nothing happened,” she says.
“So I phoned the electrician and we went around the building and saw that the electricity box was cut out from the wall. That is why the lights and the alarm weren’t working.
“A lot of damage were caused. The rain that came down this weekend made it worse because the burglars also lifted up the roof tiles to get into the church.
“That was the only way for them to get in.”
A wooden door was also burnt in an attempt by the burglars to enter the church.
Scholtz says she’s thankful to Kensington Ward Councilor, Helen Jacobs who came to assist.
Jacobs immediately set about restoring power and says: “I spoke to the technician on-site and we applied for a brand new electricity box.
“I got other departments to assist us with the applications and it got done yesterday.
“Factreton is one of the problematic areas where we have a lot of break-ins that’s been happening all over the area lately.”
Scholtz says they went to make a case at Kensington Police Station, but provincial police spokesperson Mihlali Majikela says there is no record of the case.
