A paramedic has taken it upon himself to give frontline workers in the Coronavirus pandemic a bit of a lift on their shifts.

Jason Jaftha, a paramedic, founded Help Our Healthcare Heroes, and started a coffee and doughnut drive to improve the mental well-being of emergency and health workers in Cape Town.

He started the initiative out of his own pocket, and eventually reached out to a few businesses for donations when he realised just how big the need for an energy boost was.

“I contacted a few well-known coffee and doughnut companies,” he says.

“I was surprised by the response and assistance that I was able to secure.

“It provided enough coffee and doughnuts for two ambulance bases, the City of Cape Town Fire Station and Command Centre as well as Pathcare’s main laboratory.”

After seeing what positive impact this initiative is making, the good Samaritan hopes to reach more workers.

“I would like to get to more healthcare workers to give them much-needed appreciation and encouragement while fighting the invisible threat that Covid-19 has become.”

But Jaftha says that the current supplies are not enough and he needs more donations.

“I don’t have enough sponsorships or donations to be able to provide much-needed upliftments. I would like to appeal to the greater community to help show our healthcare workers just a bit of appreciation.”

City of Cape Town Fire Station Commander, Morné Haskell says they appreciate Jaftha’s initiative: “I personally thought that it was a nice gesture and I would love for it to continue.”
