The community of Fiona Court in Heideveld, along with members of the District 6 Working Committee (D6WC), have received reusable cotton masks made from donated hotel linen to protect them while serving on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Area Vice President of Sub Saharan Africa Marriott International, Volker Heiden, says the hotel group has made funding and a total of 1000 high-quality sheets available for the creation of masks that’s been donated to members of the community and organisations.

“Marriott International has made funding available for the creation of 4300 cloth masks.

“Of these, 3300 have been donated to the community and the volunteers of D6WC to ensure that they remain protected and are able to continue with the great work that they do,” says Heiden

The masks are made from recycled bed linen that comes from the hotels.

“The hotels replace their bed linen on a regular basis, we have sought to uplift our surrounding communities by donating them.

“However, this project has been eclipsed by the need to keep vulnerable communities fed during the current environment,” says Heiden.

The D6WC partnered with other community organisations to form People Are People (PAP).

Frontline worker and PAP spokesman Graham Barnes says passionate community leaders who serve the people at grassroots level are eager to work with PAP.

“The intended vision is that communities become self-sustainable through owning feeding schemes that will serve the poor, the most vulnerable and marginalised, restoring human dignity in the Western Cape and beyond,” says Barnes.
