A medical student at Stellenbosch University has laid charges after she was allegedly assaulted by a male student at the Tygerberg Campus on Saturday.
Lebogang Masinga, 21, says she was beaten up and her alleged perpetrator has since been suspended from Maties.
A petition started by Suleiman Kharouf called “Justice for Lebogang Masinga” garnered nearly 17 000 signatures by Monday night.
It reads: “Lebo was punched in the face and throttled (with her body leaned) over the balcony at the residence.
“She literally fought for her life. Help us ensure this disgusting man doesn’t become someone’s doctor next year.”
Lebogang says both she and her alleged attacker are final-year medical students and were chilling in a friend’s room with their buddies on Friday.

She says at around 1am, the man kept touching her bum and after asking him to stop several times, she slapped him, which led to the alleged assault.
The young woman says the man was drinking and made a pest of himself.
“A final-year medical student assaulted me because I kept asking him to stop touching my ass. He continued, and a guy friend of mine spoke to him and told him to stop,” she alleges.
“He continued and after the third time, I slapped him and asked him to stop. This is what I got for asking a man to respect my body, my space,” she says pointing to her dik eyes.
She says a security guard broke up the fight and removed the man from the room.
Taking to Instagram after the incident, she expressed her fear of what her alleged perp might do in the future.
“This person is going to become someone’s doctor. He could do this to me, being his peer/colleague, imagine when he is examining your grandma, mother and children.
“Imagine what he could do if he was in a position of power?” the post reads.
Another student posted the man’s student card with is face on it, demanding his immediate expulsion.
HIT: Stellenbosch Univeristy student accused of moering female student at Tygerberg Campus
According to Stellenbosch University, the institution is investigating an an assault of a female student by a male student in Ubuntu House, a residence on the Tygerberg Campus.
“The male student was temporarily suspended from Stellenbosch University on Sunday, 5 July 2020, pending a disciplinary investigation.
“The male student is no longer in his residence or on campus. Further steps will follow, based on the outcome of the disciplinary investigation,” it said.
The Anti-GBV Movement of Maties vowed to support Masinga.
Police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk confirms: “A case was opened on Friday, 3 July 2020, of common assault. The investigation is ongoing. The suspect has not yet been arrested.”
The man, whose identity is known to the Daily Voice, could not be reached.
