DISCOVERY: Harbour DISCOVERY: Harbour

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported a female body found floating off shore of the Brass Bell Restaurant outside the Kalk Bay Harbour on Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday, the NSRI said its Simon’s Town and Strandfontein duty crews were alerted to the corpse just before 10am.

According to reports, two local men who were free-diving came across the body.

The South African Police Services (SAPS), City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a Police Diving Unit, Law Enforcement and the Water Rescue Network responded to the scene.

The body was that of a female believed to be between the ages of 30 and 40.

The woman’s identity is not yet known.

Initial investigations by police at the scene revealed local fishermen had seen the woman on Saturday evening at the water.

Provincial police spokesperson sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the incident and said police had since opened an inquest docket for investigation.

The corpse had been taken by forensic pathology services, she said, and confirmed that the woman’s identity had yet to be ascertained.

On Saturday, NSRI crew members responded to multiple flare sightings across the shoreline from Betty’s Bay to Hermanus.

While crews remained on the lookout, there were no reports of any crafts, vessels or missing persons, and the source of the flare activation remained unknown.
