DIS LEKKER YSKOUD!: White blanket of snow covered the cableway station

If you’re wondering why your toes are freezing even though it’s spring day tomorrow, it’s probably due to the fact that it’s been snowing atop Table Mountain.

It was a rare sight when snowflakes began falling on top of the berg at about 10am on Saturday.

Social media was abuzz with pictures and videos of the white blanket of snow that covered the cable station.

This is only the second time in recent years that snow has been recorded on the mountain overlooking the Mother City - the last was in 2011.

In one video on Twitter, a hiker in a red jacket could be seen braving the icy cold.

In the clip, which was viewed more than 1400 times, the user tweeted: “There was a goddamn blizzard and snow on Table Mountain today.”

One of the images shared by the Table Mountain Cableway Company shows a snowman wearing a mask and black beanie someone had built.

According to the Managing Director of the company, Wahida Parker, it’s been a long time since the mountain received snowfall.

“We are very excited with the snow that started falling on Saturday, the first time in many years that this has happened,” she said yesterday morning.

“As we speak, we still have snow falling on the mountain with the temperature at around 2°C and snow about 2-3 cm deep.

“If Capetonians are coming to see the snow, we ask that they please dress warm - it is very cold and the ground is very slippery.

“We are still seeing some snow falling while hikers are making their way up.”

Elsewhere, snow was also recorded at Elandskloof Pass near Villiersdorp, as well as the Matroosberg Mountain, Ceres and Sutherland.

Despite spring officially arriving tomorrow, the South African Weather Service says more snowfall can be expected in high-lying areas across the Cape.

Forecaster Bafana Msimanga said yesterday: “It (the snow) will be melting between tonight and midday tomorrow, while we’ll have snowfall in high-lying areas such as the Cedarberg and Cape Winelands areas again from Tuesday through to Wednesday late evening.”

Msimanga warns that another cold front is due to make landfall this week, bringing with it heavy rainfall and gale-force winds to make it even colder in the Cape.
