INSPIRE: Atvance Academy - Mitchells Plain campus celebrates its one-year anniversary

The Atvance Academy - Mitchells Plain campus is a year-old and is giving back to the community by offering free classes and transport to people with special needs.

The college first opened its doors in June 2019 and is sustained by businesses in South Africa through the Employment Tax Incentive (ETI).

The group of six facilitators, who are all originally from Mitchells Plain, say they started the college to assist mense in poorer communities get a tertiary education.

Now they are extending their campus to accommodate people with special needs.

Administrator Robertha le Roux tells the Daily Voice the classes are free and they also give R2000 towards transporting students with special needs.

“The R2000 will be paid directly into the registered students bank account, for transport purposes. The student will attend class once a week.

“The offer is open to persons aged 18 to 27 and the new division caters for the youth who have a learning or physical disability who are at home wanting to study.

“Courses will be 12 months and classes will have six students per class, accredited through SETA as well.

“We want to include all youth at our campus to empower them to better their job opportunities.”

The Special Needs division will be headed by Roxanne Daniels who says: “I had the privilege to work with Special Needs learners in both government and private institutions.

“However this was always outside of my own community.

“When I heard that Atvance Academy wants to start a Special Needs campus, I knew that it would be a great opportunity and experience to make a difference within my own community.
