SHUT: Bonteheuwel mosque

A Bonteheuwel mosque has been shut after two congregants tested positive for the Coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the City has identified Gatesville as a hotspot for the virus and has plans to help mitigate its spread.

Business owners and traders in the area have been told to get ready for a second wave.

On Tuesday, the board of Al-Jaamia Uthmania Masjid sent out a notice to the community.

Secretary Yagyah Canfield said: “One of the people who attends the mosque regularly visited and wasn’t aware he was sick.

“And over the weekend he got really worse and he went to the doctor, and he got his Covid positive results on Tuesday.”

He adds that a second person also tested positive.

“Now that we are closed, we have sanitised the mosque and we will reopen on Monday.

“We have asked everyone to isolate themselves and stay safe,” says Canfield.

In Gatesville, hawkers between Hazel and Mavis Roads will be relocated.

Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management Grant Twigg says after visiting the area, he came up with a plan.

“Gatesville is a popular economic hub for both formal and informal trading businesses, which usually attracts many people, especially over the festive season,” he says.

“Temporarily relocating some informal traders along the lower Klipfontein Road between Mavis Road and Hazel Road to a nearby parking area will support Covid-19 protocols. This proposal is in addition to the initiatives such as the distribution of toolkits to all the informal traders.

“Relevant stakeholders have been notified in writing by the City of the engagements regarding the proposed plan.”
