DIE MOER IN: Kashiefa Holtman
A Muslim woman is sizzling mad after discovering the sausage she had bought, which was marked halaal, also had a sticker saying it contained pork.
Kashiefa Holtman from Belgravia bought the wors for a family braai at Shoprite in Athlone on Saturday.
“I did not check the finer details of the print, I saw the halaal sticker and I was convinced,” she says.
However, she got a skrik when she was unpacking the sausage.
The ingredients sticker said 37% pork, but another had the Muslim Judicial Council’s logo on it, she said.
“I am Muslim and this is not acceptable. I feel like my human rights were violated here.”
The 35-year-old says this ruined the family braai.
“Shoprite is a reputable brand and what they did is reckless. I wonder who approved the classification of the sausage as halaal,” she says.
Kashiefa says she tried calling Shoprite head office but her airtime ran out while she was on hold. When contacted by the Daily Voice, Shoprite asked for Kashiefa’s details.
“Please could you share the customer’s details so that the team can make contact with the customer directly and further look into the matter? Stern action will be taken to address any lapse of discipline,” said Shoprite.
Sheikh Achmat Sedick, director of Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust, immediately went to the store to investigate.
He says he demanded answers and was told that human error led to the wrong sticker being placed on the wors: “The sausage is totally halaal, I checked their freezers.
“What happened here is that the manager was on leave and incorrect labels were sent to the shop.
“The store has always been trading as halaal since it took over from the previous owners.”
This comes after Checkers in Kenilworth Centre announced they have stopped trading as halaal.
