CASE: Milnerton SAPS

A man charged with the murder of five people who were gunned down in the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Milnerton last month, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court to apply for bail on Wednesday.

Thulani Mabija, 26, who lives in the area, handed himself over to the cops after a manhunt was launched following the mass shooting.

On October 8, five people, including two women, were killed in two separate shootings.

Reports at the time of the shootings indicated six suspects arrived at a house in Sekowa Street after 10pm.

The gunmen shot a woman in the head, killing her.

Another woman, who was with the deceased, sustained an injury when she was also hit in the head.

Later that night, the gunmen shot and killed three men and a woman in another house in Dada Street, which is not far from the first scene.

The case has been postponed to November 24 for further evidence in the bail application.

Police are still searching for the other four suspects who were involved in the shootings.

There have been six mass shootings in Cape Town since September 22 which claimed the lives of 25 people in total.

In the most recent one, in Gugulethu on Monday, seven people were shot and killed in a house when unknown gunmen opened fire on them.

An eighth victim died a day later in the hospital.

It’s believed the killings are linked to extortion syndicates operating on the Cape Flats.

This has prompted the police to launch a 24-hour dedicated hotline for the public report such cases.
