VICTIM: Wongeka Vimbayo, 34, was found dead in her shack in Greenpoint by her brother

Mystery surrounds the death of a pregnant woman found with her eyes removed.

Housing activist Wongeka Vimbayo, 34, was murdered in her shack in Greenpoint informal settlement.

Her brother made the horrific discovery last Wednesday when he peered through the window and saw her naked body on the bed.

Siphamandla Vimbayo, who lived next door, explains: “I wanted to cook and saw that her hokkie was closed and I looked through the window.

“I thought she was sleeping and I shouted, even took a broom to make some noise so she could get up, but she wouldn’t.

“Her boyfriend came through and he broke the burglar bar of the window, then I went in to look for the key and opened the door.

“The female neighbours went in and covered her with blankets and called the police.”

The grief-stricken brother says his sister’s eyes looked like they had been removed.

“I could not see her eyeballs, I only saw white stuff in her eyes,” he says.

“I’m not sure exactly what I saw, I was in such a state, but we are waiting on the post-mortem results.”

Siphamandla says he last saw his sister on November 7.

“I was away for two days and returned last week Monday, I saw her hokkie was locked,” he adds.

“I didn’t want to bother her so I didn’t knock, and so I left again. I came back the following day and her door was still locked.

“On Wednesday when I felt hungry, I went to her shack with the intention of cooking and then I made the discovery.”

It is unclear how Wongeka died as there was no blood.

“She had no cuts or bruises, her face was full of sand,” says the brother.

Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana says the circumstances surrounding the murder are being investigated.

No arrests have been made.

The victim was part of the Housing Assembly organisation which deals with housing inequalities in Cape Town, and she was also an area committee member of Ward 93.

Councillor Thando Phimpi says he will see that the men in his ward stop gender-based violence.

“We condemn the act of violence in Ward 93 and soon we will call all men to come to a meeting where they will have to take a stand against GBV,” he says.

“I have been trying to find donations towards her funeral service.”
