ISSUE: Trafalgar Park
A park is causing a massive kopseer for mense in Portlands, Mitchells Plain because it has become a haven for laaities to smoke drugs and play loud music at all hours of the night.
Trafalgar Park is situated in the centre of Hyde Park Close, Wankie Close and Trafalgar Street, making it an ideal lam spot.
However, Noel Jeftha, a Hyde Park Close resident, says: “There are a few times in the day where I have to chase these laaities away because the smell (of drugs) comes into my home or I cannot even hear my own TV.”
Jeftha, who has been living in his home for over 60 years, says the situation got worse during lockdown and that the majority of the people in the park are not from the area.
“I have been calling the emergency services and the police since last year, they know me by name already,” he says.
“What upsets me most about this situation is that we make these calls and then it seems like it is just passed between the police, Law Enforcement and Metro [cops], but then it just gets dropped.
“In December, the Metro police came to visit me at home about this, but still we do not get any sort of help.”
Ward 79 councillor Solomon Philander said he will look into the matter and try to find a solution for the residents.
“Previously, we installed a gate on Trafalgar with a lock and key and we gave a family the key. I will have to look into the matter and find out what has happened since then.”
A statement from provincial police also promised that the matter will be investigated.
