The man accused of being part of the murder plot to kill top cop Lieutenent-Charl Kinnear has been denied bail at the Bellville Regional Court today.

Former rugby player, Zane Killian, 39, appeared calm in the dock as Magistrate Nonkosi Saba told the court he had failed to prove exceptional circumstances for his release.

After spending six months in the mang Killian was told that suspicions had arisen after a state witness came under fire while he was in custody.

Saba said this caused doubt about whether or not he would attempt to influence witnesses while the trial was underway.

Kinnear who served as an area commander for the Anti-Gang Unit was assassinated outside his Bishop Lavis home on 18 September 2020 when a lone gunman shot him in the head.

During the investigation it was revealed that Killian had allegedly pinged Kinnear’s phone more than 2000 times and he was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder for illegally intercepting Kinnear’s phone.

The case was postponed to 15 April for further investigations.
