It is their job to serve and protect the public, sometimes they go the extra mile and this is why the municipality awards them.
On Friday the City’s Metropolitan Police Department commended officers for exceptional service at their mid-year awards ceremony.
The officers were recognised in five categories: Bravery, Outstanding Service, Team of the Year, Supervisor of the Year and Officer of the Year.
Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said: “The past year was, without doubt, the most difficult year we have ever experienced and for officers to excel in these circumstances, speaks to the dedication, bravery and commitment.
“We commend those who received awards, but also the rest of the staff complement – everyone plays an important role in contributing towards a safer community.”
Constable Yazeed Majiet received the bravery award for assisting a resident who was being robbed at the Town Centre in Mitchells Plain.
The constable was on his way to work when he spotted the robbery in progress.
Without backup or a firearm, he pulled over and chased and caught the suspect.
The skelm was charged with robbery and possession of stolen property.
Constable Phumeza Manikivana, who has been with the City for two years, received the award for outstanding service after she made 19 arrests during the lockdown period on a range of charges, including reckless and negligent driving, fraud, and possession of a dangerous weapon.
Chief of the City’s Metro Police Department Wayne le Roux says: “With these awards, we say thank you to our officers who walked the extra mile to serve and protect. There is a massive responsibility on the shoulders of these men and women, who are often confronted with very dangerous circumstances.”
