Emotions ran high at the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court yesterday where a suspect made his first appearance for his ex-girlfriend’s murder.
Charne Viljoen, 21, was viciously stabbed to death in Saxon Sea, Atlantis, on Monday.
The NPA’s Eric Ntabazalila confirmed Owen Steenberg is charged with intimidation, attempted murder and murder.
According to a family member, who declined to be named, Steenberg was jealous and had “planned Charne’s murder”.
Steenberg, 24, had been waiting for her since Sunday after he got into a fight with her new guy friend, who he allegedly also stabbed on Friday.
“Charne was sent to the shop by her grandpa when the vark got hold of her,” says the relative.
Charne was raised by her grandparents Nico and Miriam Viljoen in Atlantis.
Oupa Nico says: “It happened. We have to accept the loss. The law must take its course.
“We will cherish the memories we have of Nykie, especially her beautiful smile.”
He says they won’t rest until they get justice for his granddaughter.
“May Nykie's death be a message for the young people to make better decisions,” says Nico.
The devastated grandparents didn’t attend court proceedings yesterday but Charné's mother, Liezel Duiker, was present.
Tears streamed down Liezel’s face in front of the court as supporters crowded around her, many bearing placards calling for bail to be denied.
While many wanted Steenberg stoned to death, most of the residents’ anger was directed at the justice system.
Fiona Abrahams, PR councillor for Subcouncil 1, said if Steenberg had been arrested by cops on Friday when he allegedly attacked Charne’s friend, her death could have been avoided.
“They see this stuff happening again and again and yet our voices are not being heard,” said Fiona while addressing the protesters outside court.
Ntabazalila said that Steenberg’s case was postponed to 13 May for bail application.
“The NPA will oppose bail,” he said, adding the accused would remain in custody.
The community also handed over a petition with more than 2500 signatures, requesting the NPA to oppose bail.
