FOR SALE: Gerome’s Nissan. Picture supplied
Mitchells Plain good Samaritan Gerome Hendricks drives the elderly to their hospital appointments daily without charging them.
But the unemployed father of three took to social media over the weekend, to reveal that his financial struggles have forced him to sell his Nissan Sentra.
Gerome, 43, from Rocklands, started driving ou mense to and from hospital in 2015.
The elderly have become so reliant on Gerome’s Kingdom Foundation Investors services that he doesn't get a day off.
During his trips, Gerome has faced various challenges including being taxed by gangsters for protection money and getting stuck with mechanical issues or without petrol.
His family got by on his blinds installation business and his wife’s baking to sustain the free transport service, but business has been slow.
“Since after the lockdown, I've been trying to recover my business but sadly the situation worsened,” he says.
“I know many of us are faced with these challenges today because of the negative impact of the lockdown.
“Many including myself thought there is a way to recover but sadly not and have to make adjustments in life going forward.
“Today I’m faced with a decision that needs to be made going forward, and it’s going to be a huge adjustment for us to sell our car, also sadly affecting our pensioner transport service.
Gerome put the car up for sale on Facebook and has received a few offers.
“I advertised the car and have potential clients already who are interested in the car but it’s difficult to bring myself to do it because I can’t begin to imagine how my life would be without a car and I’m worried about how the pensioners will get to their hospital appointments.”
