A gang war in Atlantis has claimed the lives of three people in less than 24 hours.
Between Sunday and Tuesday morning, three men were killed in separate incidents.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says on Sunday night, Atlantis Police attended to a murder scene in bushes along Dassen Drive and Hoop Crescent in Saxonsea.
“On arrival they found the deceased, a male with multiple gunshot wounds,” says Van Wyk.
On Monday night in Merriman Street, Avondale, police attended a scene where a 39-year-old man from Neptune Castle was shot.
And yesterday morning, a 27-year-old man from Avondale was found gunned down at a bus stop. He was reportedly on his way to work when he sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
“On 25 May 2021 at 6.15am in Palmer Avenue, Avondale, Atlantis police were called to a scene where a 27-year-old male was found deceased,” says Van Wyk
“The deceased had several gunshot wounds. Suspects are yet to be arrested and the circumstances are being investigated.
“All the murders are gang-related, no arrests have been made yet.
“Detectives are following up on all leads and we are urging anyone who has information that may assist with the investigation to contact the investigating officers Detective Sergeant Pietersen and Detective Sergeant Christians on 021 571 8500.
“SAPS Crime Stop can also be contacted on 08600 10111.”
A resident, who spoke to African News Agency, said the shootings had everyone on edge.
“My son could not go to school due to the ongoing shootings. They have been shooting since Monday evening, we woke up to a hail of gunfire,” the resident says.
“We are even too afraid to come out of the house.”
Anastatia Davids, Cape Coloured Congress spokesperson for Atlantis, says boys in Atlantis have too little role models in their lives.
"In our community we have no programs to keep boys of the streets, no rehabilitation centre's, no work for our youth.
"These have no choice to resort to mischief, drugs and gangsterism.
"We also need visible law enforcement offices on the streets, especially the hotspot areas," says Davids.
