HOTSPOT: Lentegeur
After three men were shot on Tuesday in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, residents have called on the City of Cape Town to stop the proposed construction of the MyCiTi terminus in the area.
The three men were standing on the corner of Klapperbos and Rooikrans Street at 8pm when they were shot and police are investigating cases of attempted murder.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk says: “Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident in Lentegeur, where three males aged 19, 23 and 27 were shot and injured, are under investigation.”
He says no arrests have been made yet.
Pat Debba, Lentegeur Community Forum chairperson, says the shooting took place in an area that will become “a hotspot for further crimes” should the terminus be erected in 2023 on the corner of Tuberose Road and AZ Berman Drive.
“A young boy was walking to the shop when he heard the shots, so he ran to tell his grandmother who stays close to the scene,” says Pat.
“He said there were a few guys running away from the area but he was too scared to take note.
“If the terminus is built, then Rooikrans will become the only way in and out of the area, so it will become the main area for gangsters to either rob or shoot people.
“Most of the residents here have signed a petition to stop the terminus being built and we sent it to the City but we are still awaiting feedback.”
City spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said the final decision for the construction of the terminus is still being determined while the residents have until 2 July to voice their concerns.
