SERVING: Velia Davids
A good Samaritan from Kensington needs urgent help to keep her community from going hungry.
Before Velia Davids, 55, registered Velia’s Covid-19 Feeding Scheme, she worked with other organisations and has been filling tummies for as long as she can remember.
“With no end in sight to this pandemic, we can expect the hunger rates to keep growing.
“My husband, Wayne, is now unemployed and he used to empty his wallet for me but unfortunately he can’t assist me financially anymore,” she says.
Velia knows how it feels to go to bed op ‘n honger maag and says with the help of the Blue Ribbon bread company and others, they are able to feed around 500 people per week.
But it’s the small contributions of generous people that keeps her going.
“I’m not asking for much, even if it’s just a blikkie beans, bread, peanut butter or rice, or a few rands for gas, anything just to feed the laaities and especially the elders.
“I feed from Goodwood robots down to Kensington, including Maitland and Ghost Town.
Despite the dangers of Covid-19 and her arthritis, serving her community is Velia’s passion.
“The kids are vulnerable so I also speak with them, to encourage them."
