A dramatic car chase ended with a suspected robber being shot and killed at the weekend.

This after six men held up a butchery, Prime Meat, in Grabouw and sped off in a Toyota Corolla.

With the Flying Squad hot on their heels on the N2, the chase ended in Broadlands, Strand, where police shot and killed one of the suspects after a shootout.

A curious Lwandle resident says he went to the nearby highway when he heard gunshots from his house.

“I got there before the body of the man was covered. There were a lot of police officers on scene,” he says.

“I heard the men had just robbed a butchery and were shot by the police. I saw the police handcuffing four men and one was taken away by the ambulance, apparently he was also shot.”

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi says: “A suspected robber has been shot and killed allegedly by police and another wounded, following a high-speed car chase in the Strand.

“The six suspects involved in a business robbery were travelling on the N2 when they were spotted by the police. And the suspects shot at the officers who returned fire.

“One suspect was fatally wounded and a 21-year-old man sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

“Five men have been arrested for business robbery, they are between the ages of 21 and 37, found in possession of three firearms have been arrested.

“An unknown male was declared deceased on the scene. Police have opened an inquest docket for further investigation.”

The police officers have been hailed as heroes on social media after the scene pictures circulated.

Nkosinathi Mbanga said: “Well done SAPS members, though you have not done enough because you were supposed to kill them all, we are sick and tired of these hooligans.”

Mxolisi James Majola added: “Well done SAPS team. Make sure those arrested criminals rot in jail. We’re tired of Criminals walking on our South African streets with illegal weapons. Lock them up please.”
