A Lotus River skollie is set to make his first appearance at Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today after he was busted by police minutes before he was about to open fire on school children.
SAPS’ Dawood Laing, says swift action by the officers foiled the attempted gang hit in Duiker Avenue on Monday afternoon.
“Sergeant Adrian Baton and his team were busy with a separate investigation when they were approached by residents,” Laing explains.
“They were told that a gunman had been spotted standing nearby and residents feared for the safety of school children who were walking home.
“They ran immediately and caught the suspect with the firearm and 12 rounds of ammunition.”
Laing says during the investigation, it was discovered that the 26-year-old man was a member of the Six Bobs gang and had planned to shoot on members of the Dog Pounds gang.
“On Monday night the Anti-Gang Unit were patrolling in the precinct and received information about a 40-year-old man in Moosa Walk and they conducted a search of his home. They found a 9mm pistol and 12 rounds of ammunition hidden under a stove.”
Laing says both men from the Six Bobs gang will face an array of firearm related charges at court today where detectives will oppose their bail applications.
“We are grateful to residents who come forward to safeguard children walking home from school.
“The officers should be applauded for their swift action to get the gunman before he started shooting.
“If he had fired, an innocent person could easily have gotten hurt.”
