Police are searching for four men, who dressed as Council workers, robbed the Pick n Pay store on the corner of Strandfontein Road and Schaapkraal Road in Lotus River just after 9am yesterday.

SAPS’ Joseph Swartbooi said: “Philippi Police are investigating a case of business robbery.

“According to reports, four unknown males, of whom two were armed, entered a retail store on Strandfontein Road earlier today.

“One of the armed suspects forced the manager and a security officer into the safe before the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and are yet to be arrested.”

The warrant officer confirmed that no shots were fired and nobody was injured while the store was closed for the entire day as staff were allowed to go home to deal with the trauma.

A female staff member told the Daily Voice that many of the staff had their phones stolen to prevent them from calling the police.

“They came through the doors like normal until some of them pulled out guns and told us that they were going to shoot,” the traumatised woman says.

“They also took most of our phones and then they went to the offices before they ran away.

“They were dressed like council workers with orange sweaters and brown pants so they did not look suspicious until they pulled their guns out.”

A fruit stall vendor, who stands outside the gates of the centre, said a white VW Polo sped away.

“I saw the car drive away fast from the parking lot and I only knew they were thieves when the police came around here, then I asked the security guard who told me what happened,” the vendor says.
