REPAIR: Muizenberg
In celebration of Heritage Day, the 4 Humanity Project and Save Our Beach Huts Trust have teamed up to raise funds to fix the iconic colourful huisies on Muizenberg beach through a telethon on Saturday, 25 September.
The Save Our Beach Huts Trust was started by photographer Angela Gorman, who noticed that the decaying cabins were no longer camera-ready and vowed to restore them.
“Can you imagine the beach without them?” asks Angela. “They bring so much joy and memories of childhood.”
The popular huts are among the most photographed tourist attractions in the Cape, second only to Table Mountain.
Originally, they were wheeled into the sea so women could change into their swimwear without anyone seeing their boude.
But now the blue, red, green and yellow hokkies are in urgent need of some TLC.
Five huts have already been fixed and the aim is to refurbish 31 more.
Angela hopes the wave of awareness from this event won’t be a drop in the ocean but will spill over to create ongoing support for the cause.
“If every Capetonian gave R20, we could fix ALL the huts,” she adds.
To pledge, call 021 203 4040 between 9am and 2pm on Saturday.
Celebrities including Tracey Lange and Mel Jones will be answering the phones.
Banking details: Investec Bank; Name: The Beach Hut Trust; Account No. 1001 280 9519.
Catch the livestream of the telethon on the “Mahala Monday” Facebook and YouTube pages.
