SAFE: Memorial Ferness Estate bench recovered and returned to its home. Picture supplied
Ferness Estate residents say they are delighted after a memorial bench was returned to its home.
On Saturday, residents were shocked to find that the bankie, placed outside of an Azana Road home where a 64-year-old ouma was found murdered last month, was stolen.
A female resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It is appalling that somebody would take the bench for whatever reason.
“People put flowers and pictures on that bench and for somebody to even think of taking it is just disgusting.
“I am glad that it was found again because the family is still sad about what happened in that house.”
According to the resident, the tan, two-seater wicker bench was found abandoned near the Ottery School of Industries in Plantation Road on Sunday afternoon.
“When the bench went missing, lots of people put it out on Facebook and they all expressed their anger about it,” said the woman.
“A lot of people started looking for it, so maybe the people who took it saw the posts and just left it there by the school.”
According to a source, cops were called to the house in Ferness Estate shortly after 7am on Tuesday, 21 September, where the body of the woman was discovered tied up in the house.
“Her sister came to her house to pick her up and when she didn’t come out, the sister went inside and found that her home was ransacked.
“The skelms gained access by removing a window in the lounge and she was found dead with her hands tied behind her back.”
He said various valuables were stolen while her microwave and TV were found outside the home.
