Gatvol residents in Eerste River staged a protest yesterday after they were left without electricity for three days following load shedding.

Forest Village mense say they are tired of paying their neighbours for krag.

The roads that were affected by the power surge are Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria.

Most of the residents were disabled and said they couldn’t use a fire to cook.

Community leader Letho Dlali explains that they pay neighbours R10 to charge phones or buy a cup of hot water.

“There was a sick child the other day who needed warm water and when his grandma went to the flats that had electricity, they told her to pay R10 which she didn’t have. She ended up calling the ambulance.

“I paid to charge my phone and also other people would go and ask to cook at people’s homes, which was expensive and the price depended on what you were cooking.

“Most of us depend on grant money and when we buy food, we buy in bulk so all our frozen food was spoiled, we had to throw most of it out.”

He says they called Eskom but were ignored and then started protesting to get the attention of the City of Cape Town.

“Wednesday afternoon we decided to close Bob’s Way and Bulgaria Road. And on Thursday the Law Enforcement officers arrived and told us they will call Eskom.

“Eskom came and fixed the problem, so I guess people have to close off the road to get what they want.”
