Angry Heideveld residents went on the hunt for a notorious kar skelm on Wednesday night.
Oupa Arthur Matthews says he got a skrik when his blue Toyota Corolla was stolen from in front of his home In Katberg Road shortly after 7pm.
“I was busy washing the dishes and my car, which I bought only last month, was standing outside my house,” he says.
“I got a skrik when I heard my car start and someone shouted, asking if I gave someone the keys.
“We discovered that the skelm had his own set of keys that he used to start the car and drove off.”
Arthur says he ran down the street where he bumped into an ex-cop from Manenberg Police Station.
“He went to his daughter who is currently a police officer and the information was relayed quickly,” he says.
Word spread across Heideveld and residents kept a lookout for the blue vehicle but the dom skelm drove straight into police in Klipfontein Road and a chase ensued.
“He didn’t realise that the police were already looking out for the car and they saw him on Klipfontein and chased him.
“He drove into Waterberg Road where he hit the kerb and the tyre on the driver’s side burst.
“The community was very angry and chased after him but he ran into Gugulethu and escaped.
“I didn’t make a case against him. I am just happy my car is back.
“It happened so quickly that I had my car back in less than an hour.
“I am really grateful to the residents and the police.”
