KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: Mobile library in Heinz Park
The Heinz Park Social and Outreach Services organisation is looking for books so that kids in their community can benefit from reading.
The organisation runs several programmes in the area, including a daily madressa, a mobile library open to all on Saturdays and a soup kitchen on Thursdays.
Though they have about 65 Muslim children attending the madressa, the NPO says the library and soup kitchen is assisting everybody, regardless of religion.
Spokesperson Mogamat Mohamed says: “We teach children life skills, discipline and being a caring generation despite the circumstances.
“This is a very poor community and our services are open to all. Education knows no religion, same as poverty.
“It is our aim to promote equal social development with a viable support system with an educated generation.
“Hence we run a mobile library every Saturday morning where kids come and read or borrow books.
“We have a variety of books but we realise they’re not enough, especially the school books that are used to help with assignments and homework.
“Though we are a mini library, it is our wish to be fully equipped to support our community.
“This library is run by our older children, but we just need support to make sure it is up to standard and serves the needs of our beneficiaries.”
The organisation was started 15 years ago and is run from a garage, and equipment is moved around depending on the programme they do that day.
Donations of books or food parcels can be dropped off at 28 Tulip Street, Heinz Park, or call Mogamat at 067 078 6756.
