MENSE have slammed the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) case against the Employment Equity Amendment Act, saying that the party leader John Steenhuisen “only has matric”.

The DA have hauled Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth and the Employment Equity Amendment Act to court, with the Gauteng Division of the High Court saying on Tuesday night that it was reserving judgment until a later date.

The DA claim that the bill will exclude people from job opportunities according to their race and will force quotas into posts they are unqualified for.

But politicians and netizens instead blasted the party, throwing the spotlight on their leader’s academic qualifications.

It was reported last November that Steenhuisen had registered with UNISA to study courses in management, governance, and public policy to further his education after only holding a matric certificate.

ActionSA MP Malebo Kobe said: “Just for context, their party leader, John Steenhuisen only registered with UNISA a few weeks ago. He is still just a matriculant running a whole Department of Agriculture. Go figure.”

The African National Congress' (ANC) Esethu Hasane listed statistics that paint a picture of the country's employment based on race.

Political analyst Jamie Mighti slammed DA dik ding Helen Zille for her apparent hypocrisy. Mighti wrote: “He has a matric certificate of dubious quality, and you made him leader of the democratic alliance. You don't believe in meritocracy Helen.”

In 2019, Steenhuisen hit back at his critics and said that he did not need a degree to serve the people.
