PATRIOTIC Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie says Helen Zille kort ’n asyn lappie virrie pyn after the shock defection of former Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Liam Jacobs.
The PA welcomed the 24-year-old politician into its ranks, following a dramatic political shift announced during a Friday midnight Facebook Live.
Jacobs was unveiled as the new member of the party following a bots with the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, McKenzie last week.
The bekgeveg went viral as McKenzie seemed to put the young MP in sy plek for attacking the minister for not showing up at meetings called by parliament.
But on Friday night it was all hugs as Jacobs rocked up on the PA’s stream wearing the party’s green colours.
He announced himself in the late-night video, saying: “Kom op Patriots, issie mense nog wakker?”
In a Saturday video, after a statement claiming that Jacobs would reveal the DA’s swak treatment of coloureds in their party, McKenzie wysed: “Hulle sê Zille lê nou met ’n asyn lappie. Die Patriots issie reg nie.”
The PA has criticised the DA’s alleged cynical strategy of using prominent coloured leaders to curb the party’s growth.
he party accused the DA of benefitting politically from coloured communities while failing to repay them with representation, highlighting the lack of a coloured minister or deputy minister in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Responding to speculation that his defection was driven by promises of a government post, Jacobs wysed that there is no truth in that saying: “I have come home to the PA because what Gayton said hit me hard this week after our Portfolio Committee meeting. I knew I was being used.
“Wherever the president wants me to be, whatever work he has for me, I’m ready. I have been promised nothing, except the chance to be part of the fastest-growing party in South Africa.
"I feel genuinely loved and welcomed here. I am finally home.
“I am finally free. The fight for truth, accountability and justice continues... And a big thank you to Pres McKenzie and all the patriots who welcomed me with open arms.”
