Cops bust suspects with notorious assault rifles

WESTERN Cape cops have confiscated two AK-47s at two different locations on the Cape Flats over the last two days. 

They also locked up the three suspects for unlicenced and prohibited firearms and ammunition.  

SAPS on Wednesday reported the arrest of two men in Gugulethu on Tuesday night.

According to Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said: “The members approached a residence in NY4 and searched the entire premises which resulted in the recovery of an AK 47 assault rifle with ammunition hidden underneath a mattress in the living room. 

“They detained an adult man for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.”

Another man was vasgevat at an address on Great Dutch Street after cops found a 9mm pistol with ammunition hidden underneath a pillow.

The two are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged.

On Wednesday in N2 Gateway, Delft, cops seized nog ’n AK-47 in Delft. 

Swartbooi confirmed: “Police members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit deployed in Delft followed up on information of a firearm stored at a home in Gilo Street in N2 Gateway on Wednesday 27 August 2025. 

“The members surprised the occupant and conducting a search on the entire premises. “Their patience was rewarded when they found an AK 47 assault rifle hidden in a plastic bag underneath a bed. 

They detained a 24-year-old man for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Bellville Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charge.
