THE SPCA are investigating the shocking case of mass poisoning of honde in Lwandle, Strand.
Residents of Thukumbela Street found 10 dead dogs lying in their own vomit and eight convulsing on Wednesday afternoon.
The SPCA said all the homes affected were neighbouring properties in Thukumbela Street.
They added that early indications suggest that someone had laced raw meat with an as-yet unidentified substance and was thrown into the yards.
According to the Animal Welfare Society, the eight brakkies are still battling for their lives under veterinary care.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Inspector Lwazi Ntungele was called to the disturbing scene by the Animal Welfare Society Helderberg.
He explained: “What I saw this morning will stay with me for a long time. Dogs lying dead in their own vomit, children asking me if their dogs would wake up, and men who admitted that they cried for the first time in years.
"I feel a heavy responsibility to these dogs and their families to seek justice for them."
The SPCA took samples of the meat for toxicology testing.
The organisation said: “Samples of the suspected poison, vomit and animal remains have been sent to a laboratory for urgent analysis."
The SPCA suspects that the poisoning happened during night and added that no suspects have been identified at this stage.
They added: "The attack likely took place during the night or early hours of the morning. All the targeted homes were fully enclosed, raising fears that the incident was deliberate and planned."
.* If your dog is poisoned, act quickly. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, difficulty breathing, lethargy, or seizures.
