POLICE seized a homemade rifle that looks like an AK-47 following a car chase in Khayelitsha on Monday.

The intimidating weapon was armed with a magazine and looks to be made of pipes, with a trigger and a strap for carrying.

Cops attached to the Makhaza Anti-Hijacking Team spotted suspects in a blue Toyota Etios and gave chase.

However, the skelms got away and abandoned the car but left their DIY vuurwapen in the vehicle.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg reported: “Members of the Makhaza Anti-Hijacking Team followed up information about suspects in a Toyota Etios who are driving in the Khayelitsha area committing robberies.

“The members saw the vehicle driving past them and when they turned around the driver of the vehicle sped off.

“The vehicle was found abandoned in a nearby informal settlement. A homemade rifle with ammunition was found inside the vehicle.

“Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was hijacked in Parow in July 2025. The investigation into the matter continues.”

In an unrelated matter, members of Maitland Flying Squad followed up information about a suspicious Volkswagen Polo that was driving around in the Belgravia area in Athlone on Monday night.

The members spotted the vehicle on the corner of Belgravia and Klipfontein Roads, stopped and searched it and the occupants.

They found a 9mm pistol with nine rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle and arrested four males between 22 and 38 for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
