MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Muizenberg gunned down a suspected Junky Funky Kids gangster connected to a murder in a shootout in Overcome Heights.
According to Muizenberg Community Police Forum spokesperson Wayne Turner, the shooting incident took place in Rasta Road on Monday night when patrolling officers responded to the sound of heavy gunfire.
That was when alleged gang members shot at them and they retaliated by shooting back and fatally wounding a 34-year-old man.
Turner explained: “On further investigation the 34-year-old male, a suspected gangster, was connected to another murder.
“Two dockets have been opened, one for attempted murder of the police officers and the other an inquest docket into the death of the deceased male to determine how he died.
“Overcome Heights and nearby areas have, in recent months, witnessed an escalation in violent crime, frequently associated with gang-related activity, territorial disputes, and the illegal drug trade.
“This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for continued collaboration between SAPS, Law Enforcement, Neighbourhood Watches, and community structures to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident and that The Independent Police Investigating Directorate (Ipid) are on the case.
Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said: It is alleged that on 3 November 2025 at about 4pm, members of Muzenberg SAPS were static at Overcome Heights, Muizenberg, when they heard gun shots going off.
“They went to investigate where the shots were coming from, but they were allegedly shot at by JFK gangs. The police returned fire, and chased the suspects on foot.
“The suspects were chased between the shacks, and the gunshots were still exchanged.
“The members then noticed a coloured male, believed to be one of the suspects, lying on his back with no sign of life, with a gunshot wound to the head.
“IPID took over the case for investigation.”
