A recent karaoke evening at the Topeka Spur in Kenilworth delivered a truly unforgettable moment, as 13-year-old Connor Foster from Bonteheuwel stunned the audience by hitting high notes comparable to those of pop icon Beyoncé.
Connor accomplished this by passionately belting out "Listen" from the movie Dreamgirls.
Connor, a confident Grade 6 pupil at Arcadia Primary School, took centre stage. In an almost commanding way, he walked around holding the mic and delivered a powerful performance that has since sent a video viral across social media.
The clips, showing the young talent owning the floor, have garnered numerous comments celebrating his "pure talent," with some viewers even hailing his voice as a "gift from God."
Speaking to the Weekend Argus, Connor said he got his talent from his mother.
"I remember watching her rehearse at home when she performed at gigs, I would jam with, I think that is why when I get an opportunity to sing I do it. I just love it so much and I get very excited when I hear the cheering. It shows me I am doing the song right and it makes me happy," Connor said.
"My favourite singers are Ariana Grande, Celine Dion, and Lauren Allred. "
Connor’s proud parents, Gaynor and Clinton Fritz, said they knew from a very young age that their son possessed a special gift.
His mother, Gaynor, revealed the journey began with a prayer for opportunity. "Interesting enough, I prayed for the Lord to open doors for him," Fritz shared.
"He graced the stages like St. Joseph's Stone for a show called 'Culture Shocks' and a variety show at Artscape... he also sang with Jonathan Butler for a show called 'One Love.”
He also sings in the Malay choir and with the Klopse.
Fritz vividly recalled one of his earliest triumphs: "The day I will never forget is when he sang at Athlone Stadium at 10 years old," she said.
"I was so nervous for him, but I knew my son could do this. I was so overwhelmed by the way the stadium roared in-between the songs, which was 'Greatest Love of All,' and he won the overall junior competition."
His achievements didn't stop there. He also appeared on many shows and regularly performs for Bruin Child Media, noting that "Alex is the man who showcases my talent."
His ultimate goal is ambitious: "I would love to open up for the Springboks and appear at GrandWest, on the Grand Arena stage with some of our amazing talent in Cape Town."
For his 13th birthday on 4 December, it was Connor who was serenaded by local artists including Mansoor the DJ, Mujahid George, Luqmaan Adams, and Mr. August West.
Despite the whirlwind of performances, Fritz stressed that it is not just about the singing, noting that she teaches her son the importance of breaks.
"I give Connor in-between breaks. There is a time when it gets very hectic, then I have to say no and push back on certain events, as you're right, he needs playtime and he is still growing up," Fritz said.
"Growing up in the Cape Flats, it's definitely been a God send... I try to keep Connor grounded, to stay humble, always have respect for his peers, and thank God for everything he places on your path. I would love Connor to have a music scholarship, be financially okay in his craft, and create a legacy."
