Grandmother Karin van Aardt was stabbed to death while on her way to see her family

The Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court has heard that the alleged killers of Karin van Aardt hid in the grass along Jakes Gerwel Drive before their deadly smash and grab attack.
Three suspects, Ndiyabulela Vayi, Thando Nkolongo and Yamnkela Mdunyelwa, are now in the dock facing serious charges of murder and aggravated robbery, following their shocking attack 64-year-old ouma.
According the Lowvelder, the State of Friday alleged the trio lay in wait along Jakes Gerwel Drive, waiting for the perfect moment to strike when they spotted the rental vehicle Van Aardt and her husband Herman were driving to Vredenburg for their only grandchild’s eighth birthday.
As the car halted at a red light, Nkolongo sprang into action, shattering the passenger window with a spark plug. With Vayi trying to grab her belongings, things quickly escalated.
Tragically, her courage was met with brutality as Vayi allegedly stabbed her with a knife multiple times, leading to her death.
Western Cape National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed that the case has been postponed to December 19 for a formal bail application, which the state will vigorously oppose.
An additional suspect, arrested earlier, did not appear in court for the hearing on 11 December, leaving his fate uncertain.
A memorial service honouring Karin’s life is scheduled for 18 December at NG Moedergemeente Nelspruit, providing a poignant opportunity for loved ones to pay their respects.
