Today marks 13 years since the tragic loss of Reeva Steenkamp, a day that continues to echo through the lives of those she left behind.
In 2013, Reeva was fatally shot by her partner, athlete Oscar Pistorius, who was later found guilty of culpable homicide.
He was initially sentenced to six years in prison but served less than half before being released under correctional provisions, a chapter of justice that has left lasting scars on Reeva's family.
For her mother, June Steenkamp, the grief has been compounded by her own health struggles.
Diagnosed with Wernicke's Aphasia in 2025, her ability to process language and timelines has been affected, but the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation explained that she still senses the love and presence of her family.
"I have been asked: Does June know? Yes, she does. Not through dates or timelines, but through the echoes of love and connection. Her world was woven with threads of Reeva and Barry and Simone – threads she holds dear," said the organisation which advocates against gender-based violence (GBV).
In an effort to keep June's mind active and connected, the foundation has encouraged her to read, using magazines to stimulate her memory. Their efforts were met with a moving breakthrough.
"It was a poignant moment when June, after flipping through several magazines over several days, one day recognised photos of herself and her loved ones.
"Her recognition was palpable – 'my baby' and 'Barry' (husband) she pointed out. For us, it was a mixture of both sorrow and triumph."
The foundation said they will be honouring Reeva's life and legacy by lighting a candle.
It added: "We won't remind June of the significance of the day, as we prioritise June's peace and focus on her healing."
They also highlighted the crucial role of community and support in helping June navigate her grief and illness.
"June has always said that the support and kindness of others was what carried her through her darkest times. As you embark with us on this new chapter in June's life, please hug your loved ones a bit tighter today.
"Not because it is Valentine's Day, but because time with your loved ones is precious and must never be taken for granted."
