THE Atlantis man alleged to have bludgeoned his mother-in-law to death with an axe is now shifting the blame to a neighbour.
Moegamat ‘Ikie’ Tabisher, 35, appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court last Friday in a wheelchair, battered and bruised, facing charges of murder and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The victim, Janet Jordan, 67, was laid to rest on Saturday, 14 February after the vicious attack on 26 January.
Residents at the Avondale Pearl Mansion flat block assaulted Tabisher, before he allegedly fled with the murder weapon and boksie wyn.
He was officially arrested on February 9 and had been under police guard while still in the hospital.
Tabisher is currently applying for bail, and while testifying in his own defence, he claimed a neighbour murdered Jordan.
He told the court he only took away the axe from the neighbour and ran to a vehicle with his box of wine. Tabisher claimed he went to the vehicle to ‘just sit inside’.
However, it was revealed in court that Tabisher had 10 other criminal cases which stemmed from 2015, and charges vary from attempted rape, malicious damage to property, and rape.
Tabisher also has a separate ongoing case where he is alleged to have murdered his uncle.
The State is set out to prove that Tabisher had argued with his wife on the night of the incident after she apparently denied him sex.
He allegedly started assaulting his wife, and his mother-in-law, who knew about his violent streak, stepped in to save her daughter.
This, unfortunately, led to the attack on Jordan at the hands of Tabisher. She was struck twice on the head.
The vicious attack took place in front of three minor children.
The court heard members of the community were trying to assist and assaulted Tabisher when he wanted to flee with his papsak in one hand and the axe under the other. He was soon found hiding underneath a vehicle near a shopping complex.
Jordan was rushed to the hospital, but died a week later due to the extent of her injuries.
The neighbour, to whom Tabisher attempted to shift the blame, denied the claims on social media
In a post, the man wrote: “If only everyone knew how I blame myself because she is dead. If only I had come out [of the house] earlier, she would have been alive. I grew up in front of this woman. I cannot stop thinking about it. I was the one who hit him. He was my friend, but now he wants to lie [sic].”
The case has been postponed until 26 February for further testimony in the bail application.
The matter appeared before the Atlantis Magistrate Court.
